The Yarwood Award
The Yarwood Award commemorates dress historian and former Chairman of the Costume Society,
Doreen Yarwood. The Award is offered for a period of three academic years to an MA course
in dress history or costume design at a specified academic institution. The award of £500
is made annually to a student whose final project or dissertation would benefit from research
into the history of dress. It is intended to help the student with travel costs and any other
expenses incurred during the course of this research. An interim and final report will be
required from each student to demonstrate how the Award has enhanced their research. Full
and part-time post-graduate students may apply. Accredited courses may apply to the Costume
Society for consideration as future Award holders.
We are delighted to announce the 2009 Awardee is Berthe Fortin. This brings to end our successful
partnership with the MA in Costume Design and Performance at The London College of Fashion.
We now look forward to working with the MA in History of Design and Material Culture at Brighton
University (Course Director Prof. Lou Taylor), where the Award has been placed for the next
three years. Three students from the course will benefit from the Award, which will be allocated
in Spring 2010, 2011 and 2012.
We look forward to working with the students on the course at Brighton. Their reports will
be published in the Newsletter and website in due course.
